HiRO-ACEv2 Delivers Affordable 3‑km Climate Simulation for Extreme Weather
HiRO-ACEv2 updates the Ai2 Climate Emulator to produce global 3‑kilometer resolution data on rain, wind and pressure at a fraction of the cost of traditional models, while accurately capturing rare extreme events.

How HiRO-ACEv2 Works
The system combines a coarse‑grained AI model (ACE) that runs at ~100 km resolution with a downscaling network (HiROv2) that refines the output to 3 km. HiROv2 now predicts several atmospheric fields simultaneously, improving its ability to represent extreme rain, wind and pressure patterns.
When tested against the high‑resolution X‑SHiELD model, HiROv2 reproduces the statistics of rare events—those occurring once in a million samples—within a 3 % error margin. It also generates realistic tropical cyclone structures, including eyes and rain bands, and captures downslope wind bursts over complex terrain.
An updated ACE component ensures that the coarse foundation stays consistent with X‑SHiELD over multi‑year runs, allowing the combined system to generate a full year of global 3 km data whose hurricane energy matches the reference model. Running the full pipeline costs roughly 1/300 of the expense of a comparable X‑SHiELD simulation, with even greater savings for regional subsets.
Future work will focus on making HiROv2 faster and extending its applicability to other climate scenarios, such as warmer futures or historical periods, by decoupling it from the specific X‑SHiELD‑trained ACE.
