Shopify Opens Catalog to Any AI Agent, Expanding Agentic Commerce

Shopify now lets shoppers connect any AI agent to its billion-plus product catalog via the Shop app, moving beyond its Meta Muse partnership. Agents can browse and checkout with Shop Pay under human-set guardrails.

Shopify has taken a significant step toward open agentic commerce by allowing any AI agent — not just partnered ones — to access its catalog of over one billion listings. Shoppers link their preferred agent to the Shop app, which consolidates orders, tracking, and recommendations. Checkout happens inside the chat via Shop Pay, with every purchase requiring explicit human approval.

Guardrails and Control

Merchants and buyers gain practical controls: budget caps, shipping-speed filters, and product-category restrictions can be programmed into the agent. This design keeps the human in the loop while delegating the tedious search-and-compare work to software.

The move mirrors a broader industry push where Google, Amazon, Perplexity, and Meta are all racing to make AI agents transactional. Shopify’s open approach sidesteps the walled-garden friction that has slowed adoption elsewhere.

Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure: Agentic commerce at this scale drives sustained inference demand — millions of product-understanding, ranking, and checkout-orchestration calls per day. That translates directly into GPU capacity needs for model serving, vector search, and real-time personalization pipelines. Infrastructure providers that offer low-latency, high-throughput GPU clusters will be the backbone of this emerging transaction layer.
