Topgolf Cuts $11.3M in Infrastructure Costs by Migrating from VMware to VergeOS
Facing a 400% VMware price hike under Broadcom, Topgolf migrated 12,000 VMs to VergeIO's platform, saving over $11.3M and simplifying multi-site management.

Topgolf, the global sports entertainment operator with over 100 venues, has completed a large-scale migration off VMware after Broadcom's licensing changes threatened a 400% cost increase. The company moved 12,000 virtual machines to VergeIO's VergeOS platform, eliminating more than $11.3 million in combined infrastructure expenses before accounting for current hardware pricing.
For years, Topgolf's infrastructure "ran very deep" on VMware, using vSphere, ESXi, and Dell EMC VxRail hyperconverged appliances since 2017. The shift was driven by Broadcom's move to discontinue perpetual licenses and consolidate products into larger, costlier bundles. Twenty venues remain on VxRail with VMware Cloud Foundation, but full decommission is expected by mid-December.
Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure
VergeOS consolidates compute, storage, disaster recovery, networking, and AI capabilities into a single software layer, removing the need for separate proprietary appliances and management tools. For GPU-heavy workloads — such as real-time shot tracking and analytics at Topgolf venues — this unified stack reduces licensing overhead and simplifies multi-tenant segmentation across distributed sites. VergeIO reports roughly 70 new customers per quarter, most migrating from VMware during hardware refresh cycles.
The migration was bundled with a broader modernization of Topgolf's gaming architecture, illustrating how infrastructure transitions often coincide with hardware lifecycle events. As AI workloads grow, platforms that integrate virtualization, data protection, and GPU resource scheduling without vendor lock-in become strategically valuable for operators managing geographically dispersed, latency-sensitive deployments.
